Something is going on with the comments - they're not showing. I guess that happens sometimes with this company.  Their server has issues and comments are rendered unusable or invisible.  Hopefully they'll figure it out quickly, but please have patience. FIXED!

So good news! I got the job, the one I REALLY wanted! I had a second interview today with the Executive Director of a non-profit here in Sacramento. He offered me the job over lunch. I was SOOOO nervous because I wanted this job SOOOO badly. I knew he had a couple of other really solid candidates he was having trouble deciding amongst. I start Monday as his Project Director... mainly PR in the form of press releases, presentations, etc. Its a new turn in a career littered with a history of marketing, publications, editing... I'M SOOO EXCITED! And its part-time, which really works out right now.  Clap clap clap!

Tired of failing in my attempts to whip up some delectable dish for my dear ones, I wracked my brain for something I couldn't destroy. On Tuesday we made pizzas for dinner. Home-made, you know, with yeast and everything. Ummmm. Yummmm.  Joe's is the pizza on the left, the other I shared with mom.  Amazingly, he didn't eat the whole thing in one sitting.

Janet, can you see the green olives?

The night before last there was a lunar eclipse.  It was visible from pretty much all of North and South America, with the exception of course, of Alaska. None of the cool solar system events can ever be seen from Alaska (except for the Aurora Borealis). I dragged Joe and Tric out in search of the "blood moon" (which people used to think signified the imminent end of the world). At first it was hidden by clouds, but we located it around 8:00 pm and I tried to take a picture for you. It didn't work very well, but I'm going to post it anyway. Whaddaya want? I took it with a camera that fits in an Altoid can.

Blood Moon. Wooooooo.

Heeeeeres Joey.

Fall is in full swing here! I heard on the news the other day that Sacramento has had four times the average annual rainfall so far this season. Figures. It does make for some beautiful photos.

These clouds were incredible!

Ummm.  Prettttty.

I promised that I would post fall leaf pictures. The next photo is of a HUGE leaf I found in our driveway. The other two were taken downtown near UC Davis.

They match!

The trees are all different colors.

Pile o' leaves.

I guess all I had to do was publicly gripe about the lack of attention my resumes were getting. The day after my last post, I received two calls for interviews. One was for a position I applied for about three weeks ago. I interviewed for both positions on Friday. One job I REALLY want, the other I really DON'T (but it would pay the bills). I'll let you know how it turns out next week.

That's really the big news for the week. Oh, Joe lint rolled his pants.  Twice.

He's manic.

Janet, he finished off the rest of your caramels. You forgot them here last weekend.

Its the last one...

With all the time on her hands, Mom has been a crocheting fool. Blankets, hats, you name it.  If you need something crocheted, let her know.  This morning she was working on a chenile hat.

What do you think?

Oh, Joe and I did go to the movies yesterday. We saw Team America: World Police. It was hysterical, but I wouldn't recommend bringing your children OR your elders. Those South Park guys are filthy fellas. Right now I'm watching the Travel Channel, Wierd Travels. I guess because its Halloween week they're telling ghosts stories from around the country.  Tonight, haunted colleges, Massachusetts, and Savannah, Georgia.  If you're into that kind of thing, you should check it out.  Its pretty cool.

So I'm in trouble again. Yep, you got it: for not updating this page often enough. John called last night and I got an earful. Said "he looks forward to reading it," or some crap, so we made a deal that I would try to post new content at least once a week.

We had an interesting couple of weeks. Joe finished mom's garden. It will go in the corner behind the shed. I spent the week looking for jobs and bawling because I haven't received one phone call. Not one. I've sent out dozens of resumes. I've never had trouble finding work before, and I'm at my wits end. Joe is at his wits end trying to convince me "IT WILL BE OKAY". Wah.

My little project: A birdhouse!

This is growing beneath the bird feeder.
We think its corn.  Cool, huh?!

Last week firefighters battled three fires surrounding Sacramento, each probably about fifty miles away. Heading outside in the morning made me nostalgic for summers in Juneau, because it smelled like a campfire. A fine layer of ash coated Joe's worktable, and air advisories were issued for those sensitive to airborne bits of forest. Wednesday especially was a queer day. The sun was red, and the streets were hazy and empty. It was very apocolyptic-like.

Wh-wh-where is everybody?

Janet and Brianna (my best friend and god-daughter, both also from Juneau) came up Saturday to hang out. They moved to San Jose at the same time I came to Sacramento. Janet also brought Tric's best friend McGinnis (or Magoo as we affectionately call her). McGinnis is a 120 pount giant rare white malamute. She is a sweetheart with big feet and lots of hair.

Everyone, meet McGinnis.

McGinnis uses a lot of energy just panting.

When they got here Joe sat down (on his new scooter, see below) and introduced Brianna to his world: World of Heroes! After we pried them away from the computer, the six of us (including two dogs) headed up to Folsom Lake, where we all spent the day throwing the ball around, hiking, and picking burs out of our pants. We took lots of photos, but on Janet's camera, so I'll post them when I get them. That evening we played a game of Settlers.  If you haven't played this game before, I highly recommend it.  Its a development game, where you earn and spend resources to build communities.  Brianna spends much of the game building intricate structures using her game pieces. Janet won the first round.  I wouldn't let her go home with two under her belt, and squeaked out a win in the rematch.  Joe, sadly, was off his game.  What happened Joe?!

Aww, what's with the finger, Janet?

Bri has found her calling: architecture.

This is after Hurricane Jean.

Today Northern California saw a quote-Winter Storm-unquote. What that means here is winds of 30 to 40 mph, gusts to 60 mph, rain, and mudslide warnings. I though I was back home. The sky here is much prettier when the clouds start breaking up, however. Throughout the 'storm' Tric amused us. Most of you know that she is an Alaskan Husky? Which translates to mixed breed, bred specifically for sledding (pulling a dog-sled in extreme Alaskan weather conditions)?  She is of a good racing line.  When Joe opened the door to let her out this morning, he said she started out, felt the rain, and ran back in the house, tail tucked. She spent the rest of the day refusing to step foot into the backyard. It was pitiful really. I'm not sure she's relieved herself yet.  When Joe and I headed out the front door, however, it was a different story. She convinced us to take her for a ride to the video store and lent her cute mug to my final photos for today.

Beautiful

My little princess.  She knows
if she lays down its too hard to pick
her up and force her out.

Someone put their shoes on. Can I go please?!

Tric with her head out the car window. Go figure.

October 2, 2004

I can't believe its October already! Before I start rambling, I wanted to let everyone know about things going on with some of the special people in our lives.

John is back in Juneau with Jody for the winter. He is staying at Mom's house. I think he's glad to be in the southern north after a hectic summer.

Michelle Gale is moving away from Juneau! She is headed down this way, to Long Beach. Mic left Juneau this weekend, and will hang out in Ketchikan for the next month or so before heading south. We're hoping she'll drop in for a visit (hint hint).

Patty's folks moved to Ireland. They're originally from Ireland, and Patty has been saying for a while that they would go, but I was pretty surprised to hear this news. I need to call her.

Kenny bought a new/used truck. Apparently it is HUGE. Janet also bought a new/new truck, a Chevy Colorado.

Janet's is silver, and VERY nice.

Now the rambling shall commence. So far we've spent much of this weekend outdoors. Friday afternoon Joe and I went to Folsom Lake and tossed around the baseball (and, of course, the tennis ball for Tric). I didn't get any photos, but I'll be sure to take pictures next time.

Joe tackled another woodworking project today... A Workbench! The cedar construction is a creative complement to his matching set of redwood sawhorses.

Measuring...

Cutting...

Wah Lah! Eet ees fine, no?

We also picked up some other yard-improvement projects while we were at Home Depot today, including all the materials Joe will need to build mom an approximately 2 'X 6' garden in the corner of our yard. The benefit to this project will be two-fold. It will beautify the back-yard, duh, and it (cross my fingers) should lessen the amount of time mom spends trying to convince me she's gaining weight. Open door, shoo into sandbox. We also got grass seed, for reseeding the backyard AND a hand-held spreader for distributing the seed. I figure that is my project for the next two, four, or ten days.

Little spreader, Big yard.

Mom started to prep the yard, raking up more of the dead leaves, while I watered the ridiculously, outrageously, somewhat frighteningly rapidly growing hydrangeas from the wedding. I had pretty much killed them. They were brown, wilted. I figured "what the heck," dug three holes in the shade beneath the eaves, and shoved them in there. To my surprise, THEY'RE ALIVE!

Linda is a raking fool!

Our love shall live on....

While I was shooting the hydrangeas I noticed the clouds to the north were really funky looking. They're layered with stripes, almost like God forgot to raise the venetian blinds this morning. Can anyone tell me what causes this? Welcome to Bananagravy, where audience participation IS mandatory. Caution, brain cramps have been known to afflict our viewers.

Cool Cloud.

While the hubby and Linda continued to labor in the hot mid-day sun, I came inside and made bread.  We were going to thaw out spaghetti sauce I made last month, so I went with an Italian theme.   Again, I must have made some miscalculation in the recipe.

Joe: These are delicious honey! Omigod! What is it?
Jean: (reading from book) Uh, herb garlic baguettes.
Joe: Baguettes should be crunchy, like crackers, but these are awesome.

Sigh.  I mean the funniest thing is that its not funny anymore.

Bread rising on windowsill.

If my calculations are correct, Dad and Janice will soon be headed north from the storm ravaged gulf states, right into the lion's den. Their home is in Vancouver, Washington, about 50 miles southwest of the indigestion-afflicted Mount St. Helens. Dad, Janice, you guys are CRAZY!  You're like retired, second-childhood suffering adreneline junkies! I can't stress enough, TAKE PICTURES!  I found a really cool video of the original 1980 eruption on KIROTV . Choose the option for Video: Mount St. Helens' Eruption Day, 1980 (it is at the bottom).

Speaking of cool video type stuff, being community minded as we are, we all sat down and watched the presidential debate on Thursday. There are some fairly diverse political views in this house, so we set out clear ground rules in advance of the event.

  1. No running commentary
  2. No heckling
  3. No throwing stuff

I almost got sent to my room early on in the debate, but managed to convince Joe I was choking on take-out, not snorting in contemptuous pleasure. As I sat there watching Bush's face contort and twist in anger and frustration, I kept thinking, "Who does he look like? He reminds me of someone. WHO, is it, who IS it, who is IT?" I finally figured it out today.

Yeah!?

With that, I'm signing off for the night. We're going to make some espresso and Hagan Daz, veg out on the couch, and watch Dante's Peak.
