Black bears come a calling...bruins enter three homes
Police tell us today that black bears have entered three residences in the Valley over the last few days.
The latest incident came at about 2:30 this morning (Friday) at a home off of Kanata Street, according to Sergeant Steve Hernandez.
He says officers found a large bear, between 250 and 300 pounds, got into the residence through the front door.
It made a mess looking for food and defecated inside. At some point, the sergeant says it left through a side window or the back door.
A bear ended up in a garage on Rainbow Row near Glacier Valley School Wednesday night and in a house on Jennifer Drive at about two Thursday morning.
He says a woman and her two kids locked themselves in a back bedroom on Jennifer Street. It was gone by the time police arrived. They figure it was only in the house for a couple of minutes.
In all three cases, Hernandez says doors were not locked. He says the doors weren't forced open and there was no damage. So he says they're advising people to keep doors locked, not only for their safety for all the usual reasons, but now from animals.
The sergeant says they'll send a report to Fish and Game so the agency can determine if a trap needs to be set out for this animal.
Residents of Trafalgar and Kanata Street have called our studios and police this morning (Friday) reporting bears in the area.
